FAQs & ETIQUETTE
"ACT LIKE A LADY, WEAR YOUR LASHES LIKE A BOSS."
FOR A CLASSIC LASH EXTENSION SET:
A single extension is applied to a single natural lash, one at a time, to achieve a thicker, darker set of lashes that require no mascara or curlers.
FOR A VOLUME LASH EXTENSION SET:
Multiple much thinner extensions are applied to a single natural lash, for a soft yet voluminous lash set.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CLASSIC AND VOLUME LASHES?
EYELASH EXTENSIONS CAN DAMAGE YOUR NATURAL LASHES, BUT THEY DON'T HAVE TO!
Damage occurs when the lash artist applies the wrong extension to the natural lash, not taking into consideration the natural lash's growth cycle, diameter and/or length. When an extension is applied that is too heavy for the natural lash, damage occurs. Furthermore, too much adhesive, poor isolation during the lash procedure, not following after care instructions, and rubbing or sleeping on the lashes are also cause for damage.
Like other hair on our bodies, our natural lashes shed in cycles. As the natural lash grows and eventually sheds, the extension sheds with it, and a new lash grows in its place. Our lash artists have been extensively trained to recognize growth stages as to not cause any damage to the natural lashes. During a fill, lashes that have grown out too far, or are not no longer sitting properly, are taken out, and new lash extensions are applied.
ARE EXTENSIONS DAMAGING?
DUE TO OUR NATURAL LASH SHEDDING CYCLES, FILLS ARE RECOMMENDED EVERY 2-3 WEEKS.
Some clients can go 4-5 weeks between fills with impeccable care. If you come in after 3 weeks and have less than 40% of your extensions remaining, your appointment will be considered and charged as a full set. We empower you with lash education so you feel confident in caring for your new lashes. Please see our guarantee for more information on this.
WHAT DOES THE APPOINTMENT MAINTENANCE INVOLVE?
THE SHORT ANSWER IS ABSOLUTELY NOT.
In Illinois you must hold a valid Esthetics or Cosmetology state license that is in good standing to be able to do lashes. Additionally, it is an industry standard to also have earned a lash certification from a reputable lash company or school. There are many individuals and companies that do not hold the correct license or who were certified without having gone through proper or adequate training, and have not had the practice and real-life experiences of someone who was certified under industry standards.
CAN ANYONE BE A LASH ARTIST?
EXTENSIONS ARE AS INDIVIDUAL AS OUR CLIENTS.
We allow ample time to complete our work to make sure you open your eyes to gorgeous lashes. For new clients, we allow 2.5 hours to complete a full set. This provides us adequate time for a consultation and lashing. We schedule fills at 60-90 minutes until we get to know your lashes. We understand your life is busy and full of commitments, and it is definitely possibly you can be out the door in half the time, we just want to make sure our schedule allows us enough time to achieve our lash goals for each client, so please plan accordingly.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
WE SEND YOU OFF AFTER YOUR APPOINTMENT EQUIPPED TO TAKE ON THE WORLD!
Every new client at BKLS that receives a full set of lashes from us, is given a complimentary bottle of ophthalmologist-tested eyelash cleanser specially formulated for lash extensions that effectively removes eye makeup and leaves lashes squeaky clean. You'll also be properly trained on how to brush your lashes, and educated on the do's & don'ts of proper care including ingredients to avoid and any lifestyle changes that could lengthen the life of your extensions.
HOW MUCH AFTER-CARE IS REQUIRED?
LASH EXTENSIONS ARE NOT ONLY NOT FOR EVERYONE, THEY AREN'T A ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL PRODUCT EITHER.
Everyone can react differently to lash extension products and generally if you have sensitive eyes or are affected by moderate or severe allergies, there is a lash product out there for you but extensions may not be it. Additionally, having one of the following medical conditions may compromise the placement and/or retention of the extensions and should be considered when inquiring about extensions:
ARE LASH EXTENSIONS FOR EVERYONE?
- Skin Condition around eye area
(Such as Eczema, Dermatitis, Psoriasis)
(Within the last 6 months)
- Recent eye infection
- Diabetic Retinopathy
- Hordeolum/ Styes
- Hay Fever
- Watery Eye
- Corneal Disease
- Dry Eye Syndrome
New to lashes? Here is some studio etiquette to help get you started!
Please arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment time to thoroughly wash your lashes (for both fill & full sets- EVERY appointment!) with our lash cleanser and oil-free makeup wipes we provide. If we begin to prep you and find that your lashes and lash line are not squeaky clean, we will advise you to re-clean and the time then comes out of your appointment time. Arriving early will also allow you to take out your contacts without wasting precious lashing time. Ensuring your lashes and extensions have no residual makeup, oils, sweat, natural proteins, or dust to start with will allow us to maximize your appointment time doing what we love, applying lashes. We force-cure our premium grade adhesives so you have no waiting time to resume with life after your appointment. You can pop in your contacts, and even wash your lashes again immediately after your appointment.
Out of respect for your lash artist and other clients, please put your phones or other technology on silent or vibrate. A complimentary charging station is available in the studio so you can leave with not only beautiful lashes but be fully charged and ready to take on the day.
Please avoid caffeine or too much sugar for at least two hours prior to your appointment time to avoid excessive eye movements and twitching.
Although we love children, they are not allowed in the lash studio. They may wait in the shared waiting area just outside the studio. Please be aware they will be unattended in this area.
Appointments must be secured with a credit card number, however will not be charged to book the appointment. We require a 24-hour cancellation notice. If you need to reschedule your appointment, please do so within 4 hours of your appointment time so we can open up your appointment time to other clients. If we do not hear from you and you do not show up to your appointment your card will be charged for 100% of the service that was booked.
If you are running late, we can hold your appointment time for up to 15 minutes as long as we hear from you. When you arrive the service will be adapted to the remaining time, your card will be charged for the full amount, and your service will still end at the scheduled time. If you are more than 15 minutes late we will need to reschedule your appointment and your card will be charged the full amount.
We stand behind the quality of our work. In the event your lash set does not last when you return within the 2-3 week timeframe, as long as all after-care instructions were properly followed, we will reapply your set but you will only be charged for a fill.
However, if you return after 3 weeks with less than 40% of your lash extensions remaining, your appointment will be considered and charged as a full set.
After eyelash extensions are applied, stay away from all products that are waterproof, oil-based, wax-based, gel and pencil eyeliners that are not specially formulated for extensions, and spray-on facial sunscreens. Oils can loosen the bond of the lash extensions. Care must be taken to apply eye creams sparingly with avoidance of the lash line area. Avoid two days before and after fills as the oil/cream will migrate up into the lashes and prevent a strong bond and will cause premature loosening. Double check your skin care products for oil containing ingredients and keep them completely clear of your eye area. The lash cleanser should be your last step after facial cleansing to be sure other products are all safely cleansed from your lashes and eye area.
After every gym workout, yoga class, run, workout class, weight training, or any sweat-session, even if you aren't able to shower immediately, shampoo your lashes before you leave the gym with your lash cleanser to remove sweat and proteins. This will greatly extend the life of your lashes!
Hands off completely! Your phone screen is proof that our fingertips contain many oils and germs. Every time you touch your lashes you're applying oils directly to them, loosening the bond of the adhesive. Please keep your fingers off your lashes at all times. We provide you with a lash brush at every appointment that you can use to straighten your lashes or scratch your eyelid if necessary.
Avoid rubbing, pulling, picking and sleeping on your eyelash extensions. Using a travel pillow to sleep, or an eye mask that has the goggle eyes will protect your lashes from pillow-smashing.
Mascara is not recommended (even on bottom lashes), as it can dissolve the adhesive bond to your natural lashes. If you prefer to still wear mascara for special occasions or on your bottom lashes, an oil-free mascara that is specially formulated for extensions is recommended to be applied to the tips of the extensions only.
Eyelash extensions come in many forms, but all are curled. An eyelash curler is not recommended when wearing extensions. If you prefer to have curlier extensions, ask your lash artist about increasing the curl of your extensions.
Extended hot steamy showers, extended steam during facials, and steam rooms are not recommended. Excessive steam will shorten the life of your extensions.
